CHAMP, Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC

In partnership with First 5 LA, the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC created the Children’s Health and Maintenance Program (CHAMP). The primary goal of CHAMP was to address oral health disparities in underprivileged children ages zero to five in Los Angeles County via a multi-tiered approach. As a grant-funded project, CHAMP had to deliver upon defined goals and metrics outlined in the grant application, one of which was developing a resource website and print materials in English and Spanish for the various target audiences identified in the grant’s scope of work.

Web & Print Copy

  • We contracted a third-party web developer to create a basic skeleton for the website on WordPress. After the completion of the initial build, I served as webmaster for the website and populated, uploaded, and updated all visual content, resource links, and web copy. I also leveraged Google Analytics to optimize the website’s performance.

This website served as a resource hub for diverse audiences such as parents, children, schools, community organizations, and health professionals. Because of this, I had to make sure the copy I wrote showcasing different resources was appropriate for the respective target audiences. Since the copy was about oral health and medically technical, it underwent a rigorous approval process with Herman Ostrow faculty (dentists). It was pivotal for me to ensure that all information met quality standards to avoid liability issues for both Herman Ostrow and First 5 LA.

I also translated most sections of the website to Spanish because the majority of parents CHAMP served were Spanish speakers.

  • These are materials I made in collaboration with a print vendor for Herman Ostrow’s CHAMP program. I ideated, researched, and wrote copy. The vendor helped with the design of the brochures and flyers. Dental faculty and benefits specialists reviewed all content for accuracy before printing and distributing at partner sites such as schools, community organizations, and dental clinics. I also translated print materials to Spanish for our primary demographic, Spanish-speaking parents.

General Anesthesia and Children’s Oral Health, Video Scripting

Untreated cavities can abscess, and in some cases lead to death. For small children with serious cavities, getting the proper oral care often means that they must either be restrained or anesthetized because they can be highly uncooperative and fearful in the dental chair. However, a lot of parents and some dental care providers often feel that using general anesthesia on small children isn’t safe because of media coverage and misinformation. This informational video on general anesthesia for very small children is meant to ease both caregiver and dental providers’ concerns.

I led this project to completion and was responsible for outlining an initial storyboard, which USC dental faculty reviewed for technical accuracy. I liaised between faculty, the video production company, and project funders to make sure that we completed the video on time. We had to ensure that the final product addressed potential concerns and did not feel alarmist while maintaining extreme accuracy. The video also had to be representative of our diverse target population. We also made a version of this video with a Spanish voice over.
